People management involves working with your employees. It includes hiring, developing and organizing these resources and helping them solve problems. You will find tasks such as mediating disagreements and creating strategies to manage your employees’ performance under this umbrella. Your focus is to ensure your employees’ well-being. However, it also focuses on helping your employees set goals and evaluating them based on your company’s goals. Your job is to give them the tools they need to solve problems and work with their peers effectively. These are a few tips to help you with this process.
Learn To Listen
The most important skill you can develop in business is the ability to truly listen. However, you also need to be willing. As a manager or owner, you need to completely understand a situation before interjecting. Therefore, when you are listening to your employees, make eye contact and take notes. Also, don’t interrupt. When your employees are finished talking, ask for any clarification you need. Be sure to keep an open mind and avoid making assumptions about the situation or what your employees think or feel. Seek to understand first.
Learn About Your Employees’ Purposes
Every individual has reasons for working at a specific company, in a specific position and on a specific project. Whether they recognize it or not, they have a purpose. They have reasons why they enjoy their work and why they chose their role. Your job is to learn what that purpose is. What drives your employees toward success? Why do they want to contribute to your company? What makes them feel a connection to your company and their role within it?
As you learn about your employees’ purposes, you can begin to reveal how their roles contribute to the overall goals and mission of the company in the framework of their purposes. It also allows you to give them projects and tasks that fulfill their purposes, drawing them closer to the company.
Recognize Personal Challenges
Many employees may see their personal problems, such as their workload, progress, unhappiness and dissatisfaction, as problems with the company. Although the company may have inadvertently contributed to these problems, these are not company problems. This is great news because your people management skills can solve these problems relatively easily. For example, employees who are unsatisfied with their current work tasks and who want to move into new areas can be moved or their roles can be expanded to improve their satisfaction. Likewise, you can work with teams to ensure that all the members are providing equal contributions to the project and address any discrepancies or team member disagreements.
